Praying for the souls in purgatory is an important part of Christian faith and practice. For those unfamiliar with the concept, it essentially means that when a person passes away, they may still need assistance to reach their ultimate destination in heaven. The Church teaches that prayers offered on behalf of those no longer living can help them move through purgatory, where they are purified from WHY TO PRAY FOR SOULS IN PURGATORY any sins still clinging to them before entering into paradise. In praying for those in purgatory, we are essentially helping them along their journey towards eternal life with God. Such prayers can be said either while alive or after one's death; they don't have to be done by an ordained priest or religious leader but rather by anyone who has faith and believes in the power of prayer.
